Buying Refurbished Machinery: What Warranty and Repair Records to Check
Refurbished machinery is not necessarily equivalent to unused new stock. Before paying, ask what repairs or replacements have actually been carried out, what performance tests were completed and what written warranty applies.
What does refurbished mean for the exact equipment?
Request a list of parts changed, inspection work, testing, current software or controls and operating hours. A seller’s description of refurbishment is not itself evidence of complete factory restoration.
Check warranty and service conditions
Confirm which company stands behind the equipment, what components are covered, the duration and exclusions, service location, spare-parts availability and responsibility for transport if repairs are required.
Compare with a suitable new alternative
A new model may offer predictable wear and current technical documentation, while a refurbished machine may cost less initially. Compare technical capacity, accessories, condition, maintenance needs and full delivery costs for equivalent applications.
Ask for inspection and acceptance criteria
Where practical, obtain a test under the actual workload and agree on what constitutes acceptable performance. Confirm manuals, guarding, electrical supply, installation, operator training and any local regulatory requirements.
Budget the delivered operating machine
Include loading, insurance when agreed, freight, unloading, installation, consumables and possible additional repairs. A price discount is not a reliable measure of real value without those costs.
